Early Years Foundation Stage –
Supporting Children’s Development in Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
‘Mathematical development occurs in babies and young children as they seek patterns, make connections and recognise relationships through finding out about working with numbers and counting, with sorting and matching and with shape, space and measures’.
Early Years Foundation Stage 2007
This course will identify effective practice to support the development of Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy skills, focussing on underpinning knowledge to help implement the learning and development requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage document. Emphasis will be placed on ways in which children develop an understanding of
- The use of numbers as labels and for counting
- The relationship between numbers and amounts
- The combining and separating of numbers
- Shape, space and measure
- Mathematical language
This will include looking at how children learn and develop in this area, the role of the adult and links to the other five areas of learning and development
Delegates will need to bring their Early Years Foundation Stage pack with them
Delegates will get the opportunity to:
- Recognise the mathematical potential of both the indoor and outdoor environment
- Consider the role of the adult in providing enabling contexts in which mathematical development can flourish
- Identify ways in which children can engage in Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy in everyday contexts
- Consider the key role of working with parents, carers and other professionals
- Explore the role of the adult in promoting children’s Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy skills through interaction and sustained shared thinking
- Offer ideas and suggestions for supporting children’s development in Problem Solving. Reasoning and Numeracy within continuous provision indoors and out. This will include exploring a range of resources with mathematical potential
