Early Years Foundation Stage -
Supporting Children’s Physical Development

‘Babies and young children learn by being active and Physical Development takes place across all areas of Learning and Development. Physical Development must be encouraged through the provision of opportunities for them to be active and interactive and to improve their skills of co-ordination, control, manipulation and movement’

                                               Early Years Foundation Stage 2007

This course will identify effective practice to support children’s physical development, focussing on underpinning knowledge to help implement the learning and development requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage document. Emphasis will be placed on ways in which children learn:

  • How to move with confidence, imagination and safety

  • An awareness of how to keep themselves healthy

  • Skills in using equipment and materials

This will include looking at how children learn and develop in this area, the role of the adult and links to the other five areas of learning and development

Delegates will need to bring their Early Years Foundation Stage pack with them

This course will:

  • Consider the stages of physical development of babies and young children

  • Recognise the potential for children’s physical and healthy development  in both the indoor and outdoor environment

  • Consider the role of the adult in providing enabling contexts in which physical development and skills in using equipment and materials can flourish

  • Offer relevant ideas and suggestions that are challenging, interesting and motivating for supporting children’s developing physical skills within continuous provision indoors and out.

  • Consider the key role of working with parents, carers and other professionals

  • Consider the importance of promoting healthy choices for children’s future long term good health and well being

  • Recognise the potential for supporting children to understand how to maintain their health and well-being, including  providing enabling contexts in which children’s awareness of health and body can flourish
