Early Years Foundation Stage –
Supporting Children’s Development in Communication, Language and Literacy

‘As children develop speaking and listening skills they build the foundations for literacy, for making sense of visual and verbal signs and ultimately for reading and writing’

                                               Early Years Foundation Stage 2007

Language underpins all areas of the curriculum, it is vital not only for communication, but also for supporting thinking and the acquisition of new knowledge. This course will therefore, identify effective practice to support the development of Communication, Language and Literacy in children under three, focussing on underpinning knowledge to help implement the learning and development requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage document. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of providing developmentally appropriate, rich opportunities for the development of:

  • Language for Communication
  • Language for thinking
  • Linking Sounds and Letters
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Handwriting

This will include looking at how children learn and develop in this area, the role of the adult and links to the other five areas of learning and development

Delegates will need to bring their Early Years Foundation Stage pack with them

This course will:

  • Highlight the links between music, rhythm, rhyme and alliteration and the development of communication and language, including the development of phonological awareness

  • Examine the importance of providing opportunities for children to develop good listening skills

  • Consider the key role of working with parents, carers and other professionals

  • Consider why storytelling is so important to the development of Communication, Language and Literacy and will give delegates the opportunity to develop their confidence in storytelling and rhyme

  • Offer ideas and suggestions for children’s Communication, Language and Literacy development within continuous provision indoors and out, including the development of physical skills necessary for writing
